It's best to set aside at least six or seven days for the whole route. Start with two or three nights in Sarajevo. The city deserves time for its history, food and everyday life, not just a few hours of sightseeing. After Sarajevo, follow the Neretva valley to Mostar. The drive itself is part of the experience thanks to the mountains, lakes and the river that follows much of the way. Spend at least one night in Mostar. That way you can experience the Old Bridge and the old town early in the morning and in the evening, without the biggest daytime crowds. Dedicate the second day to Blagaj, Počitelj or the local food of Herzegovina.
From Mostar continue to Dubrovnik. In just a few hours the architecture, climate and atmosphere change completely. Give Dubrovnik at least two nights. One day can be devoted to the old town, while the other can be used for the sea or an excursion nearby. The advantage of this route is how little time is lost relative to the variety of experiences. It combines Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian, Mediterranean and Venetian heritage. That makes it particularly good for first-time visitors to the region. And if you have a few extra days, Kotor follows naturally from this route.
