Together, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro offer an exceptionally varied ten-day journey.
The route can begin in Sarajevo, with two nights dedicated to the city and its history.
Two nights in Kotor let you explore the old town, Perast and the bay without rushing.
On day three head for Mostar, stopping in Konjic and the scenic parts of the Neretva valley. Use Mostar as your base for exploring Herzegovina. Blagaj, Počitelj, traditional food and Herzegovinian wines can easily fill an extra day.
After Mostar continue to Trebinje, the ideal transition point between the Balkan interior and the Adriatic. From Trebinje head into Montenegro and the Bay of Kotor. The change of landscape between Herzegovina and the coast is one of the most beautiful parts of the route.

Two nights in Kotor let you explore the old town, Perast and the bay without rushing.
After the coast, head north through Montenegro. Durmitor brings a complete contrast to the Mediterranean atmosphere of Kotor. Mountain trails, the Black Lake and the Tara Canyon show how much the landscape can change over a relatively short distance. The last night can be spent in Žabljak or in one of the mountain lodges.
This kind of trip is perfect for people who don't want to spend their whole holiday on the coast.
In ten days you get Ottoman towns, Austro-Hungarian heritage, traditional villages, high mountains and the Adriatic Sea. That contrast is one of the defining features of the Balkans.
