Novi Sad is the second-largest city in Serbia and the capital of Vojvodina. Set on the banks of the Danube, it is known for its relaxed atmosphere and beauty. Petrovaradin Fortress, built in the 18th century, dominates the city and offers beautiful views of the Danube. The fortress is known for its clock tower and the underground tunnels that can be visited.
Every July the fortress hosts EXIT, one of the largest music festivals in Europe. The old town offers colourful buildings, cafés and boutiques in a pedestrian zone. Novi Sad is known as the "Serbian Athens" for its rich cultural tradition.
Nearby is Sremski Karlovci, a small town with beautiful Baroque architecture and excellent wines. The city is home to Matica Srpska, the oldest Serbian cultural institution. Local cuisine offers Vojvodina specialities with Hungarian, German and Serbian influences. Novi Sad combines history, culture and modern life in a unique way.
