Maribor is the second-largest city in Slovenia and the cultural centre of the Styria region. Set on the banks of the Drava, it is surrounded by vineyards and the gentle slopes of Pohorje. The Old Vine, more than 400 years old and considered the oldest in the world, grows in the centre of Maribor. Every year the "Old Vine" festival is held in honour of this unique vine.
Maribor's old town preserves monuments from the Middle Ages and the Baroque period. The Main Square is the heart of the old town. Maribor hosts the Festival Lent, one of Europe's largest open-air festivals, every summer.
Pohorje, the mountain above the city, offers excellent skiing and hiking. Local wines, especially whites, are among the best in Slovenia. The city offers a rich cultural life with museums, theatres and galleries. Maribor is a destination that combines history, culture and a love of wine.
