Ohrid is one of the most beautiful towns in North Macedonia and the entire Balkans. Set on the shores of Lake Ohrid, the town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lake Ohrid is one of the oldest and deepest lakes in Europe, millions of years old. The town is known as the "Macedonian Jerusalem" for its many churches; there were once said to be 365.
The Church of St Sophia preserves frescoes regarded as masterpieces of Byzantine art. The Church of St John at Kaneo, on a cliff above the lake, is one of the most photographed sights in the Balkans. Samuel's Fortress offers spectacular views of the lake and its surroundings.
The Ohrid pearl, a unique piece of jewellery, can only be found here. The lake's water is exceptionally clear, with visibility down to 22 metres. Every August nearby Struga hosts an international poetry festival. Ohrid combines nature, history and culture perfectly.
