Opatija was already a favourite retreat of the Austro-Hungarian aristocracy in the 19th century. The Lungomare, a 12-kilometre seaside promenade, is one of the most beautiful on the Adriatic.
Opatija's parks and gardens are known for plants from all over the world. Villa Angiolina, built in 1844, symbolises the beginning of tourism in the town. Opatija offers many luxury hotels, restaurants and wellness centres.
