Split is the second-largest city in Croatia and the largest on the Croatian coast. It is famous for Diocletian's Palace, built in the 4th century for the Roman emperor. The palace is a UNESCO monument and a unique example of Roman architecture in Europe. The old town grew up within the palace walls and is a living open-air museum.
The Peristyle, the palace's main square, hosts many cultural events. The Riva, Split's seafront promenade, is the favourite place for a stroll and a coffee. Split is the gateway to the islands of Brač, Hvar and Vis.
The city is known for its lively nightlife, restaurants and festivals. Split's cuisine offers excellent seafood and Dalmatian wines. Every year the Split Summer Festival presents a rich cultural programme. Split is a city that combines history, the sea and modern life.
