Medjugorje, in Herzegovina, is one of the best-known Catholic pilgrimage sites in the world. The town became famous in 1981 after the reported apparitions of the Virgin Mary to six local children. Since then Medjugorje has attracted millions of pilgrims from around the world. Apparition Hill, the site of the first apparition, is the main place of prayer and reflection.
Not far from the hill stands the parish church of St James, the heart of the pilgrimage. Pilgrims climb Križevac, a hill topped with a large cross, for prayer and contemplation. Medjugorje has become a place of spiritual renewal and peace for people of all ages.
Local Franciscans offer retreats, catechesis and the sacraments. The town offers plenty of accommodation and restaurants for pilgrims. Vineyards and olive groves adorn the surrounding landscape. Medjugorje is a place where faith, nature and spirituality become one experience.
