Sarajevo is the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina and one of Europe's most fascinating cities. Known as the "Jerusalem of the Balkans", it is home to mosques, churches, synagogues and cathedrals. Baščaršija, the 16th-century Ottoman bazaar, is the heart of the old town. Ferhadija Street links Baščaršija with the Austro-Hungarian quarter, creating a unique architectural blend.
In 1914 Sarajevo was the scene of the assassination that sparked the First World War. In 1984 the city hosted the Winter Olympics, which shaped its identity. The Sarajevo Tunnel, dug during the siege, is today a museum of resistance and resilience.
Sarajevo's cuisine offers the best ćevapi, burek and baklava in the Balkans. Bosnian coffee, served in a džezva with Turkish delight, is a ritual of its own. Every July the city hosts the Sarajevo Film Festival, one of the most prestigious film festivals in the region. Sarajevo is a city you have to experience in person to understand its spirit.
