Travnik, in central Bosnia, is known as the "City of Viziers" for its history as the seat of Ottoman governors. The town lies in a valley between the Vlašić and Vilenica mountains, on the Lašva River. Travnik Fortress, built in the 15th century, dominates the town and offers beautiful views. Plava Voda, a spring and stream flowing through the town, is one of its loveliest natural sights.
Travnik is known for traditional Bosnian cuisine and, some say, the best ćevapi in Bosnia. Ivo Andrić, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature, was born in Travnik and described it in his works. His birth house is now a museum dedicated to the writer's life and work.
The old town preserves mosques with slender minarets and traditional Ottoman houses. Nearby Mount Vlašić is known for skiing and its traditional cheese. Travnik is ideal for lovers of history, literature and nature. It is a town that preserves the spirit of Bosnia's past in a unique way.
